Self-Awareness: The Lamp You Have Been Carrying All Along

I have always loved the story of Aladdin. Not because of the genie. Because of the lamp. Most people remember the wishes, but the lamp is the real story, and it is a near perfect picture of self-awareness.
The lamp does nothing on its own. It has to be found, picked up, and engaged with. Self-awareness works the same way. The answer you are looking for is rarely missing. It is buried.
We spend a lot of energy looking for a genie. Someone to hand us the answer, tell us what to do next, or fix the thing that keeps us stuck. It rarely works, because the one thing another person can never do is decide what you actually want.

What self-awareness actually is
Even the most powerful genie could not decide what Aladdin truly wanted. That part was always his responsibility. The same is true for you.
Coaching is not about granting wishes. It is about asking better questions. That is what those questions are reaching for. Forget advice, expert opinion. The moment you see a pattern you could not see before something shifts. New choices become visible and change can begin.
This is why people often leave a good conversation saying nothing new was added, and yet everything feels different. Some dust was rubbed off their lamp.
It is practical. You see the pattern, you get a real choice, you move. People who live at speed, switching between roles, cities and seasons, often have the least quiet to hear themselves, which is exactly why a deliberate pause does so much work.
The dust on the lamp
If the answers are already in you, why are they so hard to reach? Because they are buried. Under stress, self-doubt, the roles you are expected to play, old stories about who you are, and the plain noise of everyday life.
Often the knowing shows up first as a body signal. A tightening in the chest before you say yes. A pull in the gut toward a choice your head keeps talking you out of. This kind of noticing is learning to see those signals before the noise and everyone else's expectations drown them out.
The dust is gathers on everyone. It just needs clearing, again and again, which is ordinary maintenance, not a one time fix.
How to rub off some dust
Start small and start in the body. Sit down, feel your feet on the floor, and take a few slow breaths low into your belly. Bring up something you are stuck on and, instead of solving it, bring your attention into your body and notice the first squeeze, tension, a pull, toward or away. That signal is the shiny lamp under the dust.
Now make it literal. Pick one area you have been avoiding and clear it, a cupboard, an inbox, a conversation. It is surprising how often clearing the physical dust loosens the mental kind, and you find something at the back you forgot you were keeping.
Stop waiting for a genie. Take a quiet enough moment to listen to yourself. Self-awareness is the lamp you have been carrying all along. With this all your wishes might come true.
